Delacroix’s Foreign Bodies
Oil paint on wood panel, 50 x 25.4 cm
2024

Delacroix’s Foreign bodies extract the Barbary Lions from their aggressive postures in Delacroix’s original paintings. Here, the creatures are hosts for sleeping bodies. They possess an interior depth, suggesting that the original exteriors were merely performances. Employing concepts of stillness and sleep, we discover a tenderness Delacroix was unwilling to contemplate.
